Savoury beetroot powder as an iron-rich superfood and natural food colouring

Beetroot is a truly rewarding vegetable, having earned the title of a superfood. Mainly used as a food, the sweet-flavoured beetroot allows you to use both its greenish-red leaves and its sweet root, making it ideal for both savoury and sweet dishes. But what is special about freeze-dried beetroot powder and why and how to use it? Let’s find out!

Beetroot powder as a real vitamin bomb and fibre source

Beetroot is an excellent source of fibre, providing versatile support for gastrointestinal health and aiding digestion. Beetroot is also packed with impressive amounts of vitamins and minerals. A seemingly modest, but tangy beetroot:

  • boosts cell health;
  • helps to keep your blood sugar levels stable;
  • boosts the immune system;
  • aids digestion;
  • fights inflammation;
  • boosts the body’s physical performance;
  • supports heart health and helps with high blood pressure;
  • helps in case of anaemia.

Impressive nutritional value

Sweet beetroot is rich in folate (B9), manganese, potassium, antioxidants, iron, vitamin C and a generous amount of beneficial fibre, providing the body with the necessary nutrients while being low in calories. On average, 100 grams of raw beetroot contains only 44 kilocalories, 2 grams of fibre and 1.7 grams of vegetable protein.

Beetroot powder makes consuming the vegetable easy and convenient

Powdered, freeze-dried beetroot tastes great and is practically equivalent in nutritional value to the fresh vegetable. As the freeze-drying process takes place at a very low temperature (below 40 degrees), no vitamins or minerals are destroyed in the process. The aroma and flavour are also retained during the freeze-drying process. Up to 98% of the water is simply removed from the raw material, resulting in a food that is up to 90% lighter but extremely nutritious and packed with vitamins. This guarantees a long shelf life and keeps harmful bacteria at bay.

Small quantity, high nutritional value

Since freeze-dried powder is significantly more concentrated than the fresh vegetable, just a few spoonfuls of beetroot powder are enough, instead of having to eat several large raw beetroots. Beetroot powder is therefore perfect for anyone who is not otherwise a big fan of beetroot, and is also a convenient helper for anyone whose iron levels tend to be too low.

How to use beetroot powder?

This mild-flavoured and lovely pink beetroot powder is perfect for enriching delicious smoothies and desserts as well as tangy sauces and salads. Beetroot powder is particularly suitable for homemade hummus, for example, giving it a beautiful pink hue without the dominant beetroot flavour. Beetroot powder is also an excellent garnish for raw cakes and breakfast porridge.

RECIPE TIP: Delicious beetroot-oatmeal porridge

For 2:

  • 100 g gluten-free oatmeal
  • 250 ml almond milk
  • 185 ml + 60ml water
  • a pinch of pink Himalayan salt (for seasoning)
  • 1-2 tbsp maple syrup (for seasoning)
  • 1-2 tsp Centralsun’s beetroot powder
  • 1 tsp Centralsun’s vanilla powder
  • 1 ripened banana (crushed)
  • a pinch of cinnamon
  • 2 oranges (peeled)
  • ½ tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • frozen blackcurrants (for serving)

Preparation:  Place the chopped orange in a blender with water (60 ml), beetroot powder, lemon juice, cinnamon and maple syrup (1 tbsp) and blend until smooth. Then prepare the porridge. To do this, pour the oatmeal into a pot with the remaining water and almond milk. Bring to boil and simmer over gentle heat for 8-10 minutes. When the porridge is ready, add the mashed banana, vanilla powder, a dash of cinnamon and a spoonful of maple syrup. Turn off the heat and let the porridge rest under the lid for a few more minutes. Then put the porridge into serving dishes, allow to cool slightly and pour on (or mix into) the orange and beetroot sauce. Garnish with berries.
