Sounds unbelievable, but it’s all made possible by a powerful alga – Irish Moss. Let’s take a closer look at what it is and how to use this fascinating seaweed!

What is Irish Moss?

Irish Moss (Chondrus Crispus) or Sea Moss is a sweet and salty red seaweed known as carrageenan, which grows on the rocky shores of the Atlantic Ocean and is also known as a superfood. It’s a truly versatile alga with an impressive nutritional profile, rich in iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, vitamins C and B12, antioxidants and antiviral compounds. Irish moss is also considered to be one of the best sources of plant omega-3 fatty acids.

From algae to delicious dishes

Irish Moss is a truly versatile plant full of surprises, perfect as an egg substitute in baked goods, as a solidifying ingredient in gummies or other sweets, or to add texture and an exciting flavour to a variety of savoury dishes. In addition, nutrient-rich seaweed leaves will enrich your dish with beneficial vitamins and minerals, making it even more nutritious.

How to prepare the gel?

The most versatile is the gel made from Irish moss – it can be used as a face mask, mixed into smoothies, to thicken desserts or applied to problem areas for various skin conditions. To prepare the gel, you need to: place about 20 g of seaweed leaves in water for 12-48 hours to soak. Then strain the water and place the leaves in a blender. Add ¾ cup of clean water and process until a uniform texture is achieved. Store the algae gel in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use as needed. The gel will keep for up to 1 month in the refrigerator.
