Let’s take a closer look at this exciting algae and see why kelp should be part of your daily diet!
What is kelp?
Healing organic kelp (Laminara saccharina) is a type of brown seaweed that can be found growing in the ‘underwater forests’ of the ocean depths. According to various opinions, brown seaweeds are believed to have originated as early as around 2-5 million years ago. However, these truly long-lived aquatic plants are still honoured today, and for a good reason.
Kelp as a rich superfood
Beneficial kelp is a nutrient-rich food, containing a total of 46 minerals, 16 amino acids and 11 vitamins. Amongst other things, this powerful algae is packed with vitamins A, B and C, as well as rich in iodine, iron, folic acid, calcium and, to a lesser extent, zinc. In addition, kelp helps to stimulate cellular metabolism, increase mental and physical performance and cleanse the body of waste products, including heavy metals and toxins. Kelp is also rich in antioxidants, which help to fight free radicals and prevent various types of free radical damage.
Kelp provides antiviral protection for the thyroid gland.
Minerals in kelp such as iodine and zinc act as an antiseptic in the thyroid gland and liver, cleansing the organs of various viruses such as Epstein-Barr, thereby helping to recover from various health problems. Among other things, kelp also protects the thyroid gland from radiation and helps to prevent cancer.
Kelp may also be of support in case of:
- recovery from various traumas;
- mood swings;
- low iodine levels;
- nervous pain and spasms;
- memory problems;
- various types of inflammation (including cystitis, enteritis);
- migraines;
- weakened immunity;
- epilepsy, anaemia and leukaemia;
- stress and depression;
- concentration difficulties;
- liver problems;
- thyroid diseases (e.g. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease).
How to use kelp?
Because of its salty flavour, kelp is ideal for sprinkling on salads, soups, sandwiches and sauces. However, kelp’s rich healing properties also make it a great healthy addition to breakfast, supporting the body with essential vitamins. Kelp adds a delicious flavour to a variety of seasonal dishes. So if you’re a fan of Asian-style noodles, soups or poke bowls, for example, be sure to try enriching your favourite dish with healthy seaweed broth next time! Or feel free to snack on the seaweed flakes straight from the packet.
