Different forms and options of spirulina

Spirulina is a microorganism belonging to the group of blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, and is used as an ingredient in foods and dietary supplements. The Centralsun spirulina selection includes both green and blue spirulina in different forms, from powders to tablets.

When choosing spirulina, it is worth considering the product type, origin and intended use. Spirulina powder works well in smoothies and other recipes, while tablets are a convenient alternative for those who prefer a measured portion and do not want to add the taste of spirulina to food. Blue spirulina is primarily used for its intense blue color in drinks, smoothies and foods.

Green spirulina

Traditional green spirulina has a dark green color with a strong hue and a distinct taste. The Centralsun range includes green spirulina products of different origins and production methods, including organic spirulina as well as Hawaiian and Californian spirulina.

Green spirulina powder can be mixed into smoothies, juices and other drinks. If the taste of the powder is not to your liking, or you want the simplest way to use spirulina, spirulina tablets may be preferable.

Blue spirulina

Blue spirulina differs from traditional green spirulina. It is not simply a differently colored spirulina powder; it is a product in which the blue pigment phycocyanin is extracted from spirulina during production.

Phycocyanin gives blue spirulina its characteristic intense blue color. For this reason, blue spirulina is often used as a natural colorant in smoothies, smoothie bowls, lattes, desserts and other recipes where a blue or, together with other ingredients, purplish shade is desired.

Spirulina powder or tablets?

The main difference between spirulina powder and tablets is how they are used. Powder is easy to mix into food and drinks, and the amount can be adjusted to suit the recipe. It is a good option for those who use spirulina in smoothies or other foods.

Spirulina tablets do not require mixing or measuring and are convenient to use away from home. The right choice therefore depends above all on how you wish to use spirulina.

Organic, Hawaiian and Californian spirulina

Not all spirulina products are the same. Differences may arise from the growing location, production method, certification and product form.

Alongside organic spirulina, Centralsun offers Hawaii Spirulina Pacifica and Californian spirulina. If organic certification is important to you, choose a product with the relevant organic label. To compare spirulina from different origins, see the origin, ingredients and other product-specific information on the relevant product page.

How to choose the right spirulina?

When selecting spirulina, first consider what you want to use it for. Green spirulina powder is well suited to smoothies and recipes. For convenient everyday use, tablets may be preferred. If the goal is to give food or drink an intense blue color, choose blue spirulina.

Always read the relevant product page as the origin, ingredients, method of use and recommended amount may vary between spirulina products.
