Description

What is barley grass juice powder?

Barley grass is the young green plant of barley, harvested before the grain forms. For the juice powder, the fresh grass is mechanically pressed, the fibre is removed and the juice is dried into a powder. About 21 kg of fresh grass goes into one kilo of powder.

This is the main difference from ordinary barley grass powder. Grass powder is the whole plant, dried and milled, fibre included. Grass fibre is cellulose – the same material wood is made of – and human digestion does not break it down. Juice powder contains none of that fibre: it is only the juice of the grass in dried form. That is why the powder is finer, dissolves better in a drink and a smaller amount is enough.

The taste is fresh and mild, slightly sweet, like a young green plant. The powder is bright green – the colour comes from chlorophyll.

This is a pure organic food, not a food supplement: the only ingredient is barley grass juice. Suitable for a vegan diet.

How to use

As a drink

Stir 1–2 teaspoons into a glass of water or juice and drink straight away. It dissolves most evenly in a shaker bottle. Many customers have it as their first drink of the morning.

In smoothies and green drinks

Add a teaspoon to a smoothie or a plant-milk drink. It goes well with banana, apple, cucumber and lemon.

In food

Sprinkle into salad dressing or pesto, or over plant-based dishes when serving. Do not heat it: the powder is processed at low temperature and tastes best raw.

Suggested amount: 1–2 teaspoons per day.

Ingredients and nutrition

Ingredients: 100% organic barley grass juice powder (Hordeum vulgare). No added sugar, salt, fillers or preservatives.

Vitamins and minerals

Barley grass juice powder is a concentrated food: about 21 kg of fresh grass yields 1 kg of powder. That is why the vitamin and mineral content per 100 g is very high even though the daily amount is only 1–2 teaspoons (5 g).

*NRV = nutrient reference value (EU Regulation 1169/2011). 100 g also contains 33 g of protein and 3 g of omega-3 fatty acids. Typical analytical values from the manufacturer (Utah, USA, 2025); as a natural product, values may vary between batches. The vitamin A percentage is calculated from beta-carotene (6 µg beta-carotene = 1 µg RE).

What this means

  • Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and to the maintenance of normal bones.
  • Vitamin A (from beta-carotene) contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal vision and normal skin.
  • Folate contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to the normal function of the immune system.

The beneficial effect is obtained with 5 g (1–2 teaspoons) a day as part of a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Good to know. Because of the high vitamin K content, people taking blood thinners (e.g. warfarin) should consult their doctor before use. Every batch is tested: no pesticides detected, heavy metals well below the limits, gluten below 15 mg/kg. Store in a cool (below 24 °C), dry place away from light – heat degrades chlorophyll and vitamins.

Origin and quality

The barley grass is grown on organic farms in the USA and processed in the producer’s own facility. The process is short and cold:

  1. Young grass is harvested before the grain forms, while the plant is still young and green.
  2. The juice is extracted with a mechanical cold press – like a kitchen juicer, only much bigger.
  3. The juice is chilled immediately to 1–2 °C.
  4. The juice is filtered to remove fine fibre and impurities.
  5. Microbes are reduced without heat (a non-thermal method, organic and kosher reviewed).
  6. Low-temperature drying: the product temperature stays below 41 °C and the pass through the dryer takes about 2 minutes.
  7. The powder is collected and blended for an even product.
  8. Packed and stored in a cool warehouse below 18 °C.

The grass is cut before the grain forms and pressed into juice at the same facility within hours; the powder also dissolves in cold water.

No water, solvents or additives are used at any stage. The product is not irradiated and is not treated with ethylene oxide. We pack the product in Estonia. The pack carries the EU organic logo with the Estonian control body code EE-ÖKO-03 and the indication “non-EU Agriculture”.

Storage

Store in a cool (below 24 °C), dry place away from direct sunlight. Close the pack tightly after opening – moisture makes the powder clump. Shelf life is two years from filling; the best-before date is on the pack.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between barley grass juice powder and barley grass powder?

Grass powder is the whole plant, dried and milled, fibre included. Juice powder is the pressed juice without the fibre, dried into a powder. About 21 kg of grass goes into one kilo of juice powder, so you need less of it and it dissolves better in a drink.

Why is the powder so bright green?

The colour comes from chlorophyll. The juice is dried below 41 °C in about two minutes, so the colour and fresh taste are kept.

Can I mix it into a hot drink?

We recommend cold or lukewarm liquid. Hot water changes the taste, and the powder is meant to be enjoyed raw.

Does barley grass juice powder contain gluten?

The grass is harvested before the grain forms; gluten develops in the grain. No – batch analysis shows a gluten content below 15 mg/kg, well under the EU “gluten-free” threshold of 20 mg/kg.

Which vitamins and minerals does barley grass juice powder contain?

Most of all vitamin K (a 5 g serving provides 193 % of the nutrient reference value), beta-carotene i.e. vitamin A (26 %) and folate (15 %), plus potassium, iron, magnesium, B vitamins and protein (33 g per 100 g). The full table is above.
